How to Help a Family Member Who Hoards

Watching someone you love struggle with hoarding is painful, and it is natural to want to fix things quickly. But the most effective help is patient, respectful and led by the person themselves. Here is how to support a relative without damaging your relationship.

Start with the person, not the clutter

Hoarding is usually a symptom of something deeper — grief, anxiety, trauma or a recognised disorder. If you focus only on the mess, the person feels judged and defensive. Begin instead by showing you care about them: their comfort, safety and happiness. The possessions come later.

Listen before you act

Ask gentle, open questions and really listen to the answers. Many people who hoard feel deep shame and fear losing control. Understanding what their belongings mean to them — security, memory, possibility — helps you support change rather than impose it.

Agree small, achievable steps

Whole-house clear-outs imposed from outside rarely last and often cause real distress. Agree one small area to start with, celebrate progress, and let the person keep control of every decision. Sustainable change is built one win at a time.

Look after yourself too

Supporting a relative who hoards can be exhausting and isolating. Set kind boundaries, accept that progress may be slow, and seek support for yourself where you need it. You cannot pour from an empty cup.
